John Picerne's Foundation selected as Top 20 Finalist in Joining Forces Challenge
John Picerne's foundation, Our Family for Families First Foundation, has been selected as one of 20 finalists in the Joining Forces Community Challenge. This challenge was a call to action launched by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden to "recognize citizens and organizations with a demonstrated, genuine, and deep desire to be of service to military families".
Our Family for Families First Foundation is committed to supporting military family members in the pursuit of higher education and establishing a tradition of community service. The Foundation has awarded more than $3 million in scholarships and grants to the children and spouses of military families since 2006 (more than 200 students) and initiated more than 40 targeted outreach programs in towns and cities surrounding military installations.
"We are honored to be recognized for our effort to help military families members reach their educational goals," said Maria Montalvo, Executive Director.
Our Family for Families First Foundation is now in the running to be selected as a People's Choice Award Winner. The Foundation submission may be found at http://joiningforces.challenge.gov/submissions/4788-higher-education-as-the-path-to-stronger-military-families-and-communities and a voting period will take place until March 16, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. EDT.
About Our Family for Families First Foundation
Our Family for Families First was created by John G. Picerne, president and CEO of Picerne Military Housing, to support the spouses and children of active-duty Service Members assigned to Picerne Military Housing installations at Forts Meade, Bragg, Polk, Rucker, Riley, Sill and Aberdeen Proving Ground. Families do not have to reside in on-post housing in order to qualify for scholarships or grants. The Foundation also serves to further the primary mission of Picerne Military Housing — putting military Families First™.
About Joining Forces Community Challenge In April 2011, First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden launched Joining Forces a national initiative to support and honor America's service members and their families. The initiative aims to educate, challenge, and spark action from all sectors of our society — citizens, communities, schools, non-profits, faith-based institutions, philanthropic organizations, and government — to ensure military families have the support they have earned.
In an effort to recognize those citizens and organizations with a demonstrated, genuine, and deep desire to be of service to military families, the First Lady and Dr. Biden have established the Joining Forces Community Challenge. The Challenge was established with the expectation that recognizing and celebrating those who are dedicated to improving the lives of military families will have the added benefit of encouraging others to do so as well.
